Twenty-Five is a trick taking card game commonly played in Ireland. Twenty-Five is known for being a quick game with a slightly complex card ranking order if not accustom to it. One should understand or be aware of the ranking of trump and non-trump suits before playing.

Objective:

The objective of the game is to be the first team or player to score 25 or more points by winning tricks that are worth 5-points each, before their opponents are able to.

Setup:

Twenty-Five is played with any number of players or teams; with teams sharing trick wins. A normal 52-card deck is used with 4 suits, ace to king.

Deal:

The first dealer is chosen at random then the deal moves clockwise around the table at the start of each new hand. Five cards are dealt to each player plus one card turned face up into a kitty. The suit of the turned up card is trump.

Bidding (Robbing):

If a player has the ace of the suit face up in the kitty in their hand they are able to exchange(rob) a card in their hand with the card from the kitty. If an ace is turned up the dealer can exchange(rob) one of their cards for the ace in the kitty.

Game Play:

The player to the dealers left leads the first card of the first trick and play goes clockwise around the table until everyone has played. After the first card is played each player must follow suit or play a trump card. Even if a player can follow suit they are still able to play a trump card. If a player does not have a suit of the card led they can play a trump card or play a card of a different suit.

If trump is led a player must follow suit except when it comes to the three highest trump cards. That is the 5 of trump suit, the jack of trump suit, and the ace of hearts. Players are not required to play these cards unless a higher card is played. For example, if diamonds are trump and the jack of diamonds are led and a player has an ace of hearts as their only trump suit they must play it, but they are not required to play the 5 of diamonds if it is their only card.

The highest card of the suit lead wins the trick if no trump was played, if trump was played then the highest trump card wins the trick. The winner of the trick leads the first card to the next trick.

Game Play Card Order:

The order of the trump suit is:
Hearts: 5 J A K Q 10 9 8 7 6 4 3 2
Diamonds: 5 J (A of hearts) A K Q 10 9 8 7 6 4 3 2
Spades: 5 J (A of hearts) A K Q 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 10
Clubs: 5 J (A of hearts) A K Q 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 10

The order of the other suits when they are not trump is:

Scoring:

A team or player earns 5-points for each trick won.

Winning:

The first team or player to earn 25-points wins the game. The game ends as soon as 25-points are reached.

Variations:

Two-Hundred-and-Twenty (220)

Robbing is replaced by a single round of bidding. Each player starting from the dealers left bids how many tricks they think they can win. Each player must bid higher then the last bidder. Because each trick is wroth 5-points bids are based on multiples of 5. A bid of 5 or (1-trick) is not allowed. To win a bid a player must win as many tricks as they bid, if they do not earn enough tricks they lose the value of their bid. If a player earns their bid they earn 5-points for each trick taken. A bid of 25 and the extra bid of 60 means the player must win all 5 of the tricks in the hand, the 25 bid is worth 25 if won and -25 if lost, the same for the 60 bid but is worth 60 or -60 points. The player who plays the highest card of the trump suit earns an extra 5-points. This game is played to 220-points.

One-Hundred-and-Ten (110)
